April 23 - Importance of Set Design

The longest portion of designing this book has been the 30+ set designs.
Character design is important, of course, but if the characters are in a poorly uninteresting background, the reader loses interest.
Conversely, if the background is too 'busy' or draws the attention away from the character or the story because of its ambience, I believe it fails.
I'm not sure if I'm there as this has been the biggest challenge for me. I'm torn between image correctness and atmospheric imagery. Narrative Illustration. New term for me but clearly states the type of art I wish to do - to tell a story and let the imagination run.
That's my goal for background art but keeping one constant look is all I can hope for now.
